Viking toerist

Vanwege een ‘functie elders’, dat wil zeggen, ver buiten Den Haag, kan ik door de week niet aan de challenge deelnemen. In het weekend ben ik natuurlijk wel van de partij maar ik voelde me vandaag toch wel een beetje een ‘viking toerist’. Het was in ieder geval goed om de crew weer te ontmoeten. En heerlijk om weer het koude water in te glijden. Ik kan melden dat de stemming er goed in zit, bij een enkeling begint de vermoeidheid wel al toe te slaan maar het milde weer maakt de challenge draaglijk. Ook de donaties beginnen binnen te stromen en daar doen we het natuurlijk voor. Qua sfeerimpressie van het Scheveningse strand om negen uur vanmorgen valt te vermelden dat een flinke groep fietsers zich gereed maakte voor een race over het strand. Prachtig weer, een zeer lichte bries en een zonnetje. Ideaal voor vikings en fietsers gelijk. Ook aardig te vermelden is dat de zondag, wanneer we om negen uur dippen, de enige dag is dat we elkaar bij daglicht zien. En dat is wel zo gezellig. De eerste week zit erop maar de vikings are going strong, from strength to strength. Op naar week 2!

Viking Tourist

Because of a “position elsewhere” — meaning far outside The Hague — I can’t take part in the challenge during the week. At the weekend, of course, I’m there, but today I did feel a bit like a “Viking tourist.” In any case, it was great to see the crew again. And wonderful to slip back into the cold water. I can report that spirits are high; for a few people the fatigue is already starting to set in, but the mild weather makes the challenge manageable. Donations are also starting to come in, and that’s of course what we’re doing it for.

As for the atmosphere on Scheveningen beach at nine o’clock this morning, it’s worth mentioning that a large group of cyclists were getting ready for a race along the beach. Beautiful weather, a very light breeze, and some sunshine — ideal for both Vikings and cyclists alike. Also worth noting is that Sunday, when we take our dip at nine, is the only day we see each other in daylight. And that does add to the enjoyment.

The first week is completed and the Vikings are going strong, from strength to strength. Onwards and upwards to week 2!
